June 2026 Newsletter: The Superpower of Rest
My mission is to be the first woman in 4 generations to not develop Alzheimer’s Disease (AD). On my journey of discovering ways to mitigate my risk, I pass this information on to you in this Brain-Body-Health (BBH) Newsletter.
Hello, Brain Body Health Citizen Scientists
YOUR SUPERPOWER OF REST
In case you missed it:
we’ve been exploring our precious brain and real-life superpowers:
March:Superpower of Play
April: Superpower of the Vagus Nerve
Jim and I are in Copenhagen, where 17.5 hours of daylight makes it hard to rest. There is so much light we have to use black out curtains and eye masks to sleep.
We’re nearing the end of two months in Europe where we have been doing lots of walking (10,000-20,000 steps/day) and have biked over 150 miles.
Today I am emphasizing the power REST!
Rest is good for the brain. Remember our brains take up much of our energy, so they need rest to reset and replenish. Sleep is important for consolidating memory, reducing stress, insulin resistance, and hypertension. Rest includes daydreaming and idle time which activates the brain’s default mode network – tied to creativity, insight, and connecting disparate ideas. Here in Copenhagen the clouds are the most photographed around the world. Cloud gazing ‘is a thing’ here. And that is what we do a little bit each day. We regard the ever changing, constantly morphing, miraculous nature of clouds.
At Brain Body Health, we are taking one step at a time towards better health for ourselves and others. We are making changes and adapting our lives based on monitoring these science based variables of SLEDSSSS:
SLEEP
LABORATORY and LEARNING
EXERCISE
DIET
SENSORY HEALTH
STRESS REDUCTION
SOCIAL CONNECTEDNESS
SPIRITUALITY
This is personal and precise medicine. As Citizen Scientists, we carefully weigh the pros and cons of each action we take. Navigating our health and these aging bodies requires us to slow down and pay attention. We are all unique human beings and rest is good for all of us, each day, every day. Even one full breath with a deep inhale and prolonged exhale provides moments of calm, peace, and rest. It makes a difference to our brains and bodies.
This is slow medicine at its best where rest is best!
That is why I write to you once a month. I will not bombard you with too much information. We get enough of that in our email box. At Brain Body Health, I am committed to my goal: to be the first woman in 4 generations to not develop Alzheimer’s Disease and pass helpful information to keep our brains healthy. I’m distilling studies and doing deep dives into what can improve our brain health.
And remember, even for us Brain Body Health Citizen Scientists, there needs to be time to rest. So, this is a short short news letter and a reminder that there is no time better than now to take a rest! Yep that is me, resting my feet and activating this important super power and staring at clouds as often as possible.
I’ll be back next month with more exciting brain news. Until then prioritize your rest and let me know what you are doing to create it.
